The contractor was performing maintenance on an electrolysis cell when the accident happened. An investigation has been initiated together with the police and relevant authorities to further determine the root cause of the incident. 

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the fatality at our Albras joint venture plant. This tragic incident underscores the critical importance of safety in everything we do. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and the affected colleagues,” says Eivind Kallevik, President and CEO of Hydro. 

Albras is cooperating with the direct employer to provide care and support to the family of the deceased. 

Albras is an aluminium smelter with a total production capacity of 460,000 tonnes per year. Hydro owns 51 percent of Albras, while the remaining 49 percent is owned by Nippon Amazon Aluminium Co. Ltd. Albras is located in the city of Barcarena in the Pará region in northern Brazil, next to the Alunorte alumina refinery.
