Hydro makes final build decision on Alunorte fuel-switch project

Hydro has made a final build decision to invest BRL 1.3 billion at Alunorte alumina refinery, Brazil, to carry out the fuel-switch project. The project will start in first quarter of 2022 and is expected to be in operation in 2023.

The Alunorte fuel switch project will replace heavy fuel oil with natural gas at the Hydro Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil. The fuel switch will reduce the refinery’s annual CO2 emissions by 700,000 tonnes when completed.

This project is a key enabler for Hydro’s climate strategy and global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.

Since the investment decision earlier this year, Hydro has been detailing the project towards the final build decision.

“We are committed to invest in developing the world’s largest alumina refinery, and to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. The fuel switch is a milestone in our sustainability strategy and an important demonstration of our commitment to support local development in Pará State,” says John Thuestad, Executive Vice President for Hydro Bauxite & Alumina.
