Hydro updates force majeure notice following full curtailment at Alunorte alumina refinery

Hydro Aluminium International SA and Hydro Aluminium AS have updated the force majeure declarations previously sent to their alumina and hydrate customers in March 2018, reflecting the decision taken on October 3 to fully curtail operations at Alunorte, as this will affect all alumina and hydrate deliveries from Alunorte to Hydro’s customers.

Hydro will continue working with the relevant authorities in Brazil in order to lift the embargo and to resume operations at Alunorte alumina refinery.

Hydro is South America’s biggest aluminium company after acquiring Brazilian mining company Vale’s aluminium assets in the state of Pará in 2011. Alunorte is the world’s largest alumina refinery, employs around 2,000 people and has a nameplate capacity of an annual 6.3 million tonnes. Hydro owns 92.1 percent of Alunorte.
