Hydro Alunorte employee dies following accident

Zacarias Monteiro de Araújo Neto died on February 13. The 26-year-old Alunorte employee had been hospitalized in São Paulo following an accident on the job. He had a partner and a young daughter.

Zacarias Monteiro was injured severely two days before Christmas following an accident involving caustic soda. He was treated first in Belém and then flown to São Paulo to receive the best possible care in Brazil. His situation had been unstable, but he had been recovering until a heart attack ended his life.

“We received the message about Zacarias’ death with great sadness,” says Johnny Undeli, executive vice president responsible for Hydro’s Bauxite & Alumina operations. “Now we are providing as much support as we can to the family.”

“For us, Zacarias’ death is yet another reminder that safety is not first and foremost a question about reports and statistics. A young woman has lost her partner. A little girl has lost her father. A father has lost his son and we have lost a good colleague.”
