Hydro Summer Internships 2019

Hydro offers various internship positions across business areas in Norway. This year we are recruiting over 50 interns for the summer of 2019.

An internship in Hydro is a great way for you to try out and learn more about your field of study. You will be obtaining a valuable experience and you get to tackle relevant tasks and real challenges, with support from experienced colleagues. You will also get to participate in a joint program with all the Hydro interns, allowing you to learn more about our business and acquire interdisciplinary knowledge. All the while, we expect and want you to have a fun experience during the summer.

IT positions

Energy Risk Management - Oslo

About the department

Hydro’s business area Energy is responsible for safe and efficient operations of Hydro’s power plants in Norway. Strong value creation from our power production and sourcing competitive energy to Hydro’s smelters are key drivers for Hydro’s future growth. Energy Risk Management is a part of the Finance department in Energy, and the unit is responsible for developing the commercial risk framework in Energy and for monitoring compliance with the policy. The main focus areas are Energy’s trading activity, power portfolio risk and credit risk.

Area of responsibility

Risk Management is currently in a transistion face of automatization and improvement through digital transformation. We are implementing new tools that requires understanding and knowledge of programming and big-data handling. The work requires programming skills as well as understanding of information handling.

Industrial IT – Årdal & Oslo

About the department

APICS is one of the core applications used in the production rocesses in Hydro’s smelters and foundries. It is developed with modern system development methods in cooperation with our business units, and implemented in Europe, USA, South America, and Asia.

The APICS team maintains and develops an internal Manufacturing Execution System in Hydro Aluminium, with main customers inside Primary Metal. We have 3 main applications: Carbon, Electrolysis and Casthouse.

Area of responsibility

Project work organised as Proof of Concept within Industry 4.0 programmes. The project team will be set up as a mix of APICS resources (buddy) and summer interns, and must scope, plan, execute and report result of work. Standard APICS IT-tools to be utilized in planning and reporting (Jira/ Confluense).

Industrial IT - Holmestrand

Information Systems in Holmestrand is responsible for IT systems used in the Holmestrand plant, including: IT infrastructure, Production systems (PLC, Data bases and interfaces, ERP system (MACH2) and cloud solutions.

Industrial IT - Karmøy

About the department

Hydro Aluminium, Karmøy metal plant (KMV) have today 2 electrolysis production lines, 2 casthouses and 2 anode service plants. One of the electrolysis lines is the brand new KTP, Karmøy Technology Pilot project which are running the newest, the most efficient and the most environmental friendly technology within Hydro. At our IT department we are responsible for serving all units within KMV with applications for process control system including office applications/user support.

The Asset Management team (“AM”) manages the financial assets of the two Hydro related entities, Norsk Hydro’s Pensjonskasse and Industriforsikring AS. AM has frequent review meetings and discussions with several asset managers, banks and brokers in Norway and abroad about fund investments and developments in the financial markets. The operations include sales and purchases of financial securities, transaction registration and handling and management reporting. AM operates under a concession from the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway.

  • We are looking for a person with strong Microsoft Excel skills, and the ability and drive to work efficiently to contribute to improving and developing asset management reports and analysis:
  • Design, configure and test/implement new reports in a portfolio management and reporting system to improve quality of reports and use for analyses

Corporate Strategy and Analysis is responsible for facilitating the strategy process in Hydro and running and coordinating strategy development. The unit is responsible for market analysis across Hydro’s portfolio, including long term price assessments. The unit contributes with investment analysis into larger investment projects across Hydro, and holds the responsibility for reviewing and developing positions for trade policy in Hydro.

Energy Markets manages Hydro’s overall power portfolio of equity power production, long-term power agreements for Hydro’s industry activities and market-based power contracts.

About the department

Strategy and Innovation within Extruded Solution (ES) is small team at Business Area level, whose main responsibility is to asure a proper strategy for ES is developed and monitor its implementation within the different Business Units (Extrusion, Building Systems and Precision Tubing). On innovation, we are in charge of Technology and R&D, assuring that resources in R&D are focused in adding value to the customer through a close cooperation with the Business Units.

Primary Metal Finance - Oslo

About the department

Primary Metal Finance consists of the local financial organizations located at our plants, and the central finance organization based in Oslo. The central finance unit is responsible for business planning and analysis, controlling, reporting and information systems and technology.

Area of responsibility

As an intern in Primary Metal Finance you will take part in the daily work of the team and have responsibility for your own short-term projects. Spesific tasks:

Commercial Logistics - Oslo

About the department

Logistics is responsible for shipping all the raw materials into the plants as well as all the finished products to the customers in Europe. The deparment has 20 employees, the commercial part situated in Oslo and the operational part in Karmøy.

Area of responsibility

You will work with one of the current supply chain projects as a dedicated member. It's expected that you will deliver on specific parts of the project together with another project member. You will also work operationally for a period in order to gain operational experience (most likely with Shipping).

Hydro Aluminium Business Systems (Lean) - Oslo

About the department

Hydro Aluminium Business System (AMBS) central team is part of the HR organization and is located at headquarter in Oslo. Our team consists of 9 employees with different academic background. We work closely together with continuous improvement resources and line managemenat at our plants and in staff functions.

Area of responsibility

Our central team has every year summer interns working on a team project supporting our Industry 4.0 program. During spring 2019 we identify a team project and form a multidisciplinary team that works 8 weeks to solve the project task. Projects are clearly business linked and supported by the central team as well as plant resources.

Education

Metal Sourcing & Trading - Oslo

Metal Sourcing & Trading (MST) is a business unit within Primary Metal Commercial and is responsible for the optimization of the Hydro’s global standard ingot portfolio and the management of LME price risk exposure on behalf of the company. The group consists of two trading departments, risk department, finance department and contract administration department. Trading results are reported on MST’s bottom line. We are looking for a Summer Intern with keen interest in financial and commodity markets.

Hydro Projects - Husnes

Projects is a specialized and dedicated project organization in Hydro. Our main tasks are to develop and execute investments projects in a structured, efficient and predictable way. Projects provides project management services to all Business Areas in Hydro. The main portfolio today includes several projects in Brazil for Bauxite and Alumina and projects in Norway for Primary Metal. The Project Completion department is responsible for providing all projects with multidiscipline competence to ensure that Mechanical Completion and Commissioning are performed in a structured and systematic way.

  • Projects is executing the Husnes restart project. The project objective is to upgrade and restart part of the Husnes aluminium plant.

Energy Finance / Operations & Settlement - Oslo

About the department

Operations & Settlement (O&S) is located in Rjukan, Norway. The department is responsible for nomination of Hydro's price independent power portfolios in the nordic markets towards Nordpool and for nomination of Hydro's power position in Germany towards EPEX. O&S acts as balancing responsible for the Hydro Group’s power consumption in Norway and Germany. The department is also responsible for collection of metering values in Norway and for weekly and monthly settlement towards national transmission system operators and other internal and external counterparties.

Area of responsibility

The scope of the internship will be to work together with O&S (and also other teams within Finance and Energy) to support them in realizing various projects. These projects will involve both strengthening current processes using automation and developing new tools in response to changes within the nominations and settlement environment. Working with data and presentation of data will be essential in the projects.

Energy Power Operations - Oslo

About the department

Power Operations in Hydro is responsible for a safe and efficient operation and maintenance of Hydro’s power plants, which are located in three different areas: Røldal-Suldal, Sogn and Telemark. The increased use of digital technology shall transform processes, increase talent engagement, and improve business models.

The Energy 4.0 program shall facilitate this transformation with the following support to the line organization: Increase digital competence in the organization, provide the tools for the talents in the organization to improve their own digital talent, help facilitate digital transformation of core processes, create an environment for experimenting and failure & explore possible new work processes and business models.

Extrusion Europe OPEX – Tønder (Denmark) and Oslo

About the department

Extruded Solutions is the Business Area within Hydro that produces extruded aluminium profiles and further process those to (semi) finished products. Our fabrication activities (CNC, punching, bending, welding etc.) are expanding fast, especially within the Automotive segment. Our Operational Excellence (OPEX) Europe department is responsible for supporting our European operational units with knowledge, problem solving, training of employees, implementation of new processes and products. The position is located within the OPEX Extrusion Europe department and with longer stay at our Tønder extrusion plant in Denmark. The Tønder plant is a lead Automotive plant, delivering complex, high-quality products to the European automotive industry.

Area of responsibility

Material properties are inspected during running production in our quality lab’s to ensure that it is according to customer standard by so-called tensile testing. We like to evaluate if variations in ductility can be related to the variations in the production process (chemical composition, extrusion process, cooling, intermediate storage and ageing), to the tensile testing method or both.

The objective is to propose improvement actions in order to reduce the variation in ductility. The content of the work is to:

  • Establish an understanding of the extrusion process, the tensile testing process and their variabilities
  • Gather historical data from our quality system and process control system followed by data analysis to look for correlations. Root cause analyses including possible scientific explanation metallurgical effects linked to extrusion process.

There will be one week introduction at Hydro’s head-office at Vækerø in Oslo followed by a longer stay at our production plant in Tønder, Denmark at one of our lead Automotive plants. It is a genuine opportunity to get a good understanding of the variability in the extrusion process and why state-of-the-art process control is a must when delivering to the Automotive industry.

Commercial/Technology - Sunndal

About the department

Hycast is world leading within developement of casting and melt treatment technology for Hydro and the external market. The company has a turnover of approc 300 MNOK, wheras 90% is export to the global aluminum business. The Technology department consists of 7 higly competent employees with a broad range of competencies and experience.

  • The intended scope is to participate in an ongoing project for development of automated and modularized engineering in the company.

The anode factory produces anodes for the pot room operation and consist of three production areas with respective critical processes. The factory is highly automated and offers great opportunities for further optimization of processes and equipment.

About the department

Årdal Carbon produces around 200 000 t of anodes per year. Anodes are supplied to Karmøy KTP, Sunndal, Høyanger and Årdal electrolysis. Electrolysis operation strongly depends on a stable/predictable anode quality. We are working with continuous improvement in production processes, building up superior operator knowledge/experience, establishing pro-active maintenance & aiming for the best HSE.

Primary Metal Technology (PMT) is responsible for research and development related to primary production of aluminium. Projects is a specialized and dedicated project organization in Hydro. Our main tasks are to develop and execute investments projects in a structured, efficient and predictable way. Projects provides project management services to all Business Areas in Hydro. The main portfolio today includes several projects in Brazil for Bauxite and Alumina and projects in Norway for Primary Metal. The foundry alloy and sheet ingot casthouses in Årdal produce around 220 000 tons of semi-finished products per year. Foundry alloys are commonly used in car parts such as wheels, engine and suspension parts, and structural components, whereas sheet ingots are used to produce foil, plates for offset-print, building and construction and automotive industry.

About the department

The electrolysis in Øvre Årdal produces around 200 000 tons of liquid aluminium per year. About the department

The position will be a part of the Metallurgy department, which interacts with all of the production departments in cross-functional tasks.

Area of responsibility

The student will perform product testing at the metallurgical laboratory. The project will include investigations that are of importance for our development strategy on the product side, and will include heat treatment, mechanical testing and metallography.

Rolling Mill - Holmestrand

About the department

The Rolling Department has close to 100 employees and is responsible for the Hot- and Cold rolling of aluminium sheet ingots in Hydro Holmestrand. It's an operational-, industrial environment which has HSE, compliance and operational excellence as key focus. Approximately 300 aluminium coils are processed at different machines per week.

Area of responsibility

You will map and analyze the material flow and logistic of coils, to further improve safety, productivity and costs. It is also possible to work on identifying opportunities of improving productivity in general, by utilizing theory from Lean production, Six Sigma and other.

Education

  • Logistics and/or Operational Excellence (Lean, Six sigma etc.).

  • A variety of tools and methods can be used according to your preferences, with the objective to present a final report with simple drawings and calculations supporting suggested actions.
