      Alunorte

Hydro Alunorte is the world's largest alumina refinery outside China and is located in the city of Barcarena, state of Pará. The alumina is the raw material for aluminium and is produced from bauxite, through the process called Bayer.

The bauxite used in Alunorte comes from Mineração Paragominas through a pipeline and from Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN) through the port of “Vila do Conde”. Part of the alumina produced is exported and the other part is supplied for the Albras plant also located in Barcarena and which produces aluminum ingots.

The production process of alumina generates a residue, which is washed, filtered and stored in the refinery solid residue deposits. Alunorte has two solid residue deposits: DRS 1 and DRS 2.

The plant first began its operations in 1995, when the refinery was inaugurated. The second had its testing and commissioning phase started in August 2016. The DRS 1 and DRS2 are not classified as dams according to the Brazilian legislations.
