Our businesses

Hydro is a leading aluminium and renewable energy company committed to a sustainable future. Our purpose is to create more viable societies by developing natural resources into products and solutions in innovative and efficient ways.

Our businesses in aluminium

Hydro is present throughout the aluminium value chain, from energy to bauxite mining and alumina refining, primary aluminium, aluminium extrusions and aluminium recycling.

Aluminium business areas

Hydro Extrusions serves customers in all industries, from automotive and mass transportation to building and construction, electronics, offshore and maritime. Our experts help design and manufacture customized extrusions to fully fabricated components. We can also offer solutions made with recycled and low-carbon aluminium.

Hydro Bauxite & Alumina includes one of the largest bauxite mines in the world and the largest alumina refinery outside China, both located in Brazil. We extract the bauxite in Paragominas and refine it to obtain alumina (aluminum oxide) at the Alunorte refinery in Barcarena. Bauxite and alumina represent the first two links in the value chain on the way to aluminium metal that becomes a wide variety of aluminium products supporting several industries.

With primary metal production facilities in Europe, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Qatar, and recycling facilities throughout Europe and in the U.S., two-thirds of our primary aluminum production is based on renewable energy.

Aluminium joint ventures

Albras is the largest producer of primary aluminium in Brazil and has been supplying domestic and external markets with high-purity ingots since 1985. Hydro is the company's main shareholder, with 51% of the shares in this joint venture. The other shareholder is Nippon Amazon Aluminum Co. Ltd. (NAAC), formed by a consortium of Japanese companies, trading companies, and consumers and manufacturers of aluminium products.

The Qatalum site includes a carbon plant, a reduction plant, a casthouse, port and storage facilities as well as a captive power plant. The value-added extrusion ingots and foundry alloys produced there are used in a variety of industries, including automotive, construction, engineering and consumer goods manufacturing. Qatar Aluminium Limited is owned equally by Hydro Aluminium of Norway and Qatar Aluminium Manufacturing Company (QAMCO) of Qatar.

Slovalco is a primary aluminium producer in Ziar nad Hronom, Slovakia. Slovalco has an annual production capacity of 175,000 tonnes of primary aluminium and a casthouse capacity of close to 200,000 tonnes. The final products are aluminium alloys in the shape of extrusion ingots and primary foundry alloys shaped as ingots. Hydro is the company's main shareholder, with 55.3% of the shares in this joint venture.

Energy joint ventures

The world needs sustainable battery production, which means that we need a plan for what to do with them at end-of life. As the first generations of electrical cars are now reaching their end-of-life, there is urgent need to be ready to recycle both the cars and their batteries. Hydrovolt, a joint venture between Hydro and Northvolt, is building Europe’s largest electric car battery recycling facility in Fredrikstad, Norway. The recycling plant will be powered by 100% renewable energy. By pioneering battery recycling of EVs and industrial batteries, Hydrovolt creates a circular solution for end-of-life batteries by producing high quality and sustainable secondary raw materials. Hydrovolt is able to recycle the entire Norwegian volumes of end-of-life batteries, and will also collect batteries from Sweden and other parts of Europe. Hydrovolt also plan to recycle other types of batteries, including from electric ferries and other ships.

It is estimated that industrial companies are responsible for almost 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, these emissions must be reduced rapidly and significantly. Hydro Rein aims to help industrial companies succeed with the energy transition by facilitating access to affordable renewable power, sourced from its portfolio of hydro, solar and wind projects in Brazil and the Nordics. Hydro Rein also provides industrial-scale, behind-the-meter solutions to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and cut costs.
